I cry, real heart wrenching sobs that shake my entire body. My heart aches for the baby that will now have to grow up without his mom and every time I picture that I cry some more. Mila rubs gentle circles on my back. “It’s just so sad,” I sob, and she nods in agreement. “Is Kain okay?”

“He’s getting on with it, he doesn’t have a choice. The baby is allowed home tomorrow and then he’s flying solo. Of course, he’ll have the support of his brothers and he’s going to stay at the clubhouse so that the old ladies can help out. The baby will be so well looked after, everyone is heartbroken,” says Mila.

“Should I go and see him?” I ask.

“Sweetie he’s got enough on. He’ll call if he needs you,” she says softly and I know that she’s just trying to let me down gently, he doesn’t want to see me, and I don’t blame him.

I slide down to the floor of the bedroom that the guys came and decorated for the baby. It’s cream in colour. I didn’t find out the baby’s sex and so it’ll be a surprise. I stroke my pencil against the cream wall and draw out the bunny from Peter Rabbit. It’s been a long time since I drew anything, but I have to take my mind off Kain and Ginger. The time passes quickly and before I know it, I’ve drawn a whole scene of bunnies in the farmers field stealing the vegetables.

By lunch time I’ve drawn myself into a stupor and I drop my pencil on the floor, the clatter it makes rings out around the emptiness of the house. I pull myself up into the rocking chair and I sob. For Ginger, for Kain and for their baby.

I sit for some time ugly crying to myself, I’m surprised when the bedroom door opens and Mila enters, she rushes to my side, dropping to her knees and wrapping me in a hug.

“My heart hurts for them Mila,” I sob. She rubs my back gently, crying with me.

“I know Sweetie, it’s awful,” she whispers.

“How is he?”

“He’s pretty closed off to be honest. He sits all day with the baby in the nursey. It’s been two days now since Ginger passed and he’s only left the hospital to wash and change. He’ll only leave the baby if a certain nurse is there. I guess his possessive side is taking over and carrying him through.”

“I want to see him; do you think he’ll want to see me?” I ask. I know by her expression that she doesn’t think it’s a good idea. “But he needs someone,” I sob.

“I don’t think that person is you right now sweetie,” she sighs sympathetically. “He’s shutting everyone out and he specifically told you to stay away.” I nod in agreement. Kain would probably take his mood out on me right now. “Wow, I love this,” she says pushing to her feet and stroking her fingers over the new art work.
